Individual Therapy
As the Writer's Psych, I provide therapy for writers experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, the effects of trauma, and a range of other psychological difficulties.
In my decade of psychological work with writers I have also worked in conventional psychology clinics, in person and online, and in psychiatric settings. Therapy can help writers to manage common difficulties associated with writing such as procrastination, perfectionism, self-doubt, overwhelm and self-criticism. Where therapy differs from coaching is that it tends to explore a writer's history and psychological underpinnings more so than coaching, which can be more goal oriented. The Writer's Psych philosophy centres on the therapist and writer forming a collaborative and safe working partnership. This collaborative partnership is the basis for exploring the history and internal logic of the writer's difficulties, developing creative, unique and evidence-based strategies to reduce symptoms and improve mental health. I am trained in a range of therapeutic models, with the favourites being Schema Therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Transformational Chairwork therapy. I would not dream of providing a one size fits all therapeutic service. Each relationship is unique, as is each particular course of therapy. I honour and respect the sensitivity associated with sharing private information. Confidentiality is paramount. * Psychological therapy is covered by Medicare in Australia, so if you have a referral from a GP you will be eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan and an associated fee rebate. Individual Coaching
I am an experienced coach who helps writers develop their writermind capacity so that their thinking, attitudes and behaviour are in line with their writing desires. Sometimes this entails identifying and strengthening existing qualities and capacities, sometimes it is about identifying and addressing unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving, sometimes it is about respectfully challenging and providing accountability for the writer. Always it is about respectful and hype-free encouragement and support.
I founded the boutique private practice, A Mind of One's Own, a private psychology and coaching practice that was active between 2013 and 2024. The Writer's Psych practice will continue this work, coaching and counselling early-career and recreational writers right through to highly experienced Australian and international authors of fiction and non-fiction. I also work with PhD and Masters' students as they write their theses. I work with writers wherever they are in the world, mostly by zoom. The fee schedule for coaching can be found here.
